A film about Vardø from the North Norwegian Art Center

Between 2020 and 2022, NNKS will continue its long-term commitment at a selected location in northern Norway. Until 2022, the North Norwegian Art Center (NNKS) will focus on Vardø in Finnmark. In January 2020, we announced two production scholarships for artists and these projects are part of NNKS 'presence in Norway's northeasternmost city.

NNKS chose the project proposals of the artists HC Gilje and the group Alt Går Bra (AGB) which in conceptual and contextual ways related to Vardø's history and present. The projects are currently under production and will be presented during 2022. Stay tuned to nnks.no

Vardø (Northern Sami; Várggát, Kven: Vuorea, Finnish: Vuoreija) has a population of just over 2,000 people. The city is located on the coast in the northeast of Norway and is the only city in Finnmark with contiguous buildings from before World War II. It is Finnmark's oldest fishing village and was known as the Pomor capital, because the city in the 19th century was a center of trade with Russia. From more recent times, one finds here Steilneset memorial site, the controversial radar stations Globus and the Nordic championship in snowball throwing (part of Yukigassen). In Vardø, the Coastal Uprising also has its origins - a movement that directs strong criticism at how the community's marine resources have been privatized and taken out of the region.

Background

For two years, the North Norwegian Art Center produced and presented a series of art projects on Mo (2017-2019), as well as actualizing the place of art on Mo through several different public presentations and meetings. Between 2020 and 2022, NNKS will continue the project with a long-term commitment at a selected location in northern Norway, this time based in Vardø.
