States of Glass - a symposium

As part of the exhibition project «States of Glass», Nordnorsk kunstnersenter will hold a symposium including presentations of Nordic glass artists, film elements and lectures with exciting professionals in this field.

A thematic starting point is the unique potential for expression in glass as a material, and how the properties of glass is well suited for commenting the times we live in. The symposium will be held physically for a limited audience in Lofoten Kulturhus in Svolvær, but will also be video streamed. The language of the symposium will be English.


For physical attendance: Maximum 30 participants, with free registration via Lofoten Kulturhus.

Lecture with Mette Bielefeldt Bruun.

Mette Bielefeldt Bruun is the academic leader for handicraft and design at Museum Sydøstdanmark, with glass as her main field. She will help us put the Nordic artists of the project «States of Glass» in perspective. The lecture is pre-recorded.

Artist presentation with Maria Koshenkova.

Maria Koshenkova is one of the participating artists in the exhibition «States of Glass» at Nordnorsk kunstnersenter. She also participates in the guest artist program, a part of the project. Maria is interested in the unique possibilities of using glass as a means of expression and is pushing the boundaries for her material in her explorative practice.

Artist presentation with Karin Forslund.

Karin Forslund is one of the participating artists in the exhibition «States of Glass» at Nordnorsk kunstnersenter. She is also participating in the guest artist program, a part of the project. Karin often uses a method of letting warm expanding glass display itself within a given framework, working on the glass on a chemical level in the burning process. This leads the glass to act in surprising ways. Karin also works with exploring the medium of glass within film and will show us excerpts from this work.

"Walking with Breath" by the artist duo Frantzsen&Mjanger.

Live co-created performance with glass in the landscape. The participants in the symposium will take part in a small walk to Svinøya. (Not to be streamed.) Please dress for the weather, and keep your hands free (no umbrellas etc.).

Saturday August 21

Lecture with Freyja Hartzell.

Freyja Hartzell is an associate professor at Bard Graduate Center in New York. She has been researching how glass objects functioned as a communicator in Europe’s political, cultural, and social upheavals during the inter war period. “Glass is magic,” writes Hartzell. “Not quite liquid, not quite solid, it is a shape-shifter: transforming itself, and, when penetrated by light, transfiguring the world.” Hartzell will go deeper into these aspects in her lecture and shed light on the customs presented and demonstrated.

Artist presentation with Liu Chien Kuang.

Liu Chien-Kuang is one of the participating artists in the exhibition «States of Glass» at Nordnorsk kunstnersenter. He is also participating in the guest artist program, a part of the project. Kuang is interested in combining older techniques with new knowledge, thus developing and challenging glass as a medium. He often combines glass with other materials from his own cultural background.

Artist presentation with Rikka Haapasaari.

Rikka Haapasaari is one of the participating artists in the guest artist program of the project «States of Glass» at Nordnorsk kunstnersenter. Rikka is a trained glass artist working directly with glass, but also brings the material to the medium of film. Here she explores questions relating to the material’s own subjectivity.
