North Norwegian Art Centre has selected the artists Helene Førde and Marcellvs L. to join the research vessel R/V Helmer Hanssen in Lofoten / Vesterålen from 16.6.-27.6.2018.

The cruise takes place in collaboration with the UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and other research institutions. It allows an artist to sail with the research vessel R/V Helmer Hansen, along with 28 researchers and a crew. The vessel sails in the area of Tromsø, Vesterålen and Lofoten in the period 16.6.-27.6.2018. The main focus on this cruise is research in the form of collections and observations relating to the species Raudåte (Calanus finmarchicus), which is one of the most important sources of nutrition for a variety of fish and animals in the sea.
The project is being carried out in collaboration with UiT-The Arctic University of Norway and their project “Sea Patches – Zooplankton patchiness in the ocean”.

Helene Førde is mainly working with installations, sculptural works, and sound. A general feature of Førde’s work is that she uses a site sensitive or context sensitive approach. She is interested in exploring perception, awareness, and memories, in addition to the distinctive story and character of a space. Hidden or known cultural history is connected with current political challenges and changes in society. Førde graduated from Bergen Academy of Art and Design and The Nordic Sound Art Program with a Master in Fine Art in 2014. The same year she won the international sound art competition Sonotopia. Førde has in recent years been showing work in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Italy.

Practical information
The program will initially run over two tours, with an annual announcement. We are looking for motivated artists who are interested in marine research and are expected to be independent and self-propelled in their projects. There will not be a separate program for the artistic work onboard, instead artists will be included in the daily routines that are also subject to the researchers and crew.

NNKS supports the artist’s round trip to Tromsø. Food and accomondation is covered throughout the journey. The next application deadline will be announced late 2018. For questions, please contact karolin@nnks.no

The project is being carried out in collaboration with University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway and their project “Sea Patches – Zooplankton patchiness in the ocean“.
