When the festival returned in 1996, it was with a new orientation, reflected in a separate part of the programme, entitled Kunst i natur [Art in Nature]. Three artists in the project – Inghild Karlsen, Astrid Eidseth Rygh and Inger Haugen – worked with landscape in a broad sense.

During the festival, as the festival’s secretary explained in Lofotposten, they developed installations that were to stand until nature brought them down. Karlsen’s work, Gringo Bar, placed by a popular tourist trail to the Tjeldbergtinden mountain, was inspired by a trip to São Paulo, where she had been the only Norwegian artist to participate in the 1994 biennial. Beyond Kunst i Natur, the festival had the same format and major elements as in previous years, minus the outdoor sculptures. The main exhibitor was Snorre Kyllingmark, originally from Svolvær.
