To See the World, To Feel With Your Eyes
In 2005, LIAF was established as a foundation, thus becoming independent of Vågan municipality. Curator of the 2006 festival was Maaretta Jaukkuri, who had good knowledge of the region, having been one of the head curators for Skulpturlandskap Nordland [Sculpture Landscape Nordland]. The title of her exhibition – To see the world, to feel with your eyes – reflected a wish to ‘present art which, in various ways, creates situations, images or stories that many can recognise’.
That year, there were many specially commissioned works connected with local problems and themes. Hans Hamid Rasmussen composed a project in which he worked across an extended period with teams and associations in Vågan, while Kari Mjåtveit created a work with Svolvær lyric poet Ellen Einan (1931–2013). Amar Kanwar, from India, made a film based on recordings in Henningsvær, and the artist duo Dias&Riedweg’s film Juksa dealt with population flight on Fugløya, south of Bodø. In addition to Kjølelageret, a second building on the main square in Svolvær was used as an exhibition space for the fifteen participating artists.
